Illényi Katica

Illényi Katica

It was obvious for Katica to be a musician: her mother was a pianist and her father a violinist in the Opera House of Budapest. She learned to play the violin from a small age, and her brilliance on her instrument earned her a place in the ‘Special Talents’ class, started by the Hungarian Academy of Music. From then on she played in the orchestra of the two big operas of the town, the Opera House and the Erkel Theatre. During these times she discovered her love for the operetta. She also decided that she is going to sing and dance, too. As a singer she made her successful debut abroad with a touring opera company.

The year 1999 was a turning point in the life of Katica, as she started starring in the most popular TV-shows and performing in larger venues all through the country. She sang and played the first violin at the München Gala of Operetta, with great success, as she was invited to the following year’s ball too.

After so much touring and playing live, her first solo album was recorded in 2002, and appeared at our label with the title Premier. Katica recorded some evergreen songs written in the Twenties, Thirties, Fourties. Mostly these are swing band songs and popular songs from that era; and at the same time, she recorded some interpretations of classical, operetta music and movie score. The record was loved by the public and acclaimed by the critics, as it got the MRTon Award.

The sequel came out in 2005, titled Mézillatú nyár (Honeysuckle Rose). The tracks again range from swing song covers and movie theme songs to operetta pieces, and live recordings from a music theatre, Thália Theatre. The CD also features two video takes of this show.
